It is surrounded by an area of pine forest, at the foot of Pico Birigoyo (1,811 metres).<br \/>\nThis is one of the oldest recreational areas of the island, and very popular among local families as a day out when the weather is good. Its location is ideal as a starting point for the famous Volcano Route, as it is approximately half way along the mountain ridge that divides the island. The Volcano Route , in turn, is part of the well known Baston Trail. You may camp in a tent here for a maximum of 7 days.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><strong>Access:<\/strong><\/strong>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">There is <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"9\">no direct public bus service<\/b> to Refugio de El Pilar. The nearest bus stops require taking a local taxi or hiking up via road LP-301:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"9\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"9,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">From Caldera Visitor Center (El Paso):<\/b> ~13.5 km \/ 8.4 mi (15\u201320 min drive\/taxi).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"9,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">From San Isidro (Bre\u00f1a Alta):<\/b> ~11.5 km \/ 7.1 mi (15\u201320 min drive\/taxi).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">On foot:<\/b> Hikers can ascend from San Isidro following the official <b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"66\">PR LP 18<\/b> trail (+1,400 m elevation gain).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"titulo\"><b>Facilities: <\/b><\/span>Drinking water, showers, toilets, grills, benches.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Accommodation:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u00a0Free<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"titulo\"><b>Permit\/Authorisation: <\/b><\/span>For use of cooking facilities 1 and 2, north cooking facilities and camping zone, permission required.
